Taxis Through Time
The first horse drawn hackney carriages emerged in Paris and London during the 17th century. Hansom Cabs largely replaced these in the 19th century mainly due to safety and speed issues.
The industry was revolutionised in 1891 when German inventor, Wilhelm Bruhm invented the taximeter, a mechanical device to calculate the fare of a certain journey; this heralded the birth of the modern taxi and the first metered taxi, a Daimler Victoria in 1897.
The industry boomed and formed some of societys most recognisable sights such as yellow New York cabs and the ubiquitous black London taxis.
